HAROLD NIGHT

Every Wednesday | 8:00PM | Improv | $6
Free for Comedy School Students

There will be no Harold Night on the following dates:
September 5 – Join us for Cambridge Footlights!
October 31 – Halloween
Harold Night is part of our up-and-coming talent night series. You will see new comedians, some seasoned veterans, and everything in between. See four teams every Wednesday night! They’ll perform a Harold, a popular long-form improv structure developed by Del Close at iO Comedy Theater in Chicago. These hilarious and smart performances start with a single suggestion which inspires many scenes that weave together at the end of the show.

Harold teams are comprised of up-and-coming comedians that are sharpening their skills in preparation for our main stage shows. They are made up of improv performers who have finished all levels of improv classes and auditioned, and now have an opportunity to continue their training through regular rehearsals and performances.

Terms & Conditions
About our shows: We have many types of shows to appeal to a wide range of comedic tastes, and some styles that may be new to you. Our improv and sketch comedy shows are more like a play or other traditional theatre experience, rather than a stand-up show or nightclub atmosphere. Improv and sketch cast members do not interact with the audience during the performance.

Before booking a large group for a performance, we encourage you to come by in advance and see a show on your own. We might even offer a free ticket for you to sample a show and be sure it is the right fit for your group.

ALL SALES ARE FINAL. There are no refunds on classes or shows unless canceled or changed by the venue. Class space is limited, and reservations are final. Please provide a valid telephone number/email address at checkout so we can contact you, if needed. Should you need to transfer to another class start date, please email laugh@saccomedyspot.com.

  • All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 10-15 minutes prior to showtime. For best seating, please arrive early with your entire party.
  • Tickets not picked up by showtime may be released to the public for resale.

We want to make sure everyone has the best experience possible at the Comedy Spot. If you have questions, special needs, or requests, please contact us at (916) 444-3137 or laugh@saccomedyspot.com to discuss concerns and potential options.

THE CAST OF HAROLD NIGHT

ALEX SHEWMAKER
Alex (standard spelling) Shewmaker (unusual spelling) was born in Missouri and raised in the City of Trees. He first got into comedy after watching the movie Airplane! and hearing that “Leon is getting larger!” Most of his schooling was from the Bobby “The Brain” Heenan School of Broadcasting, in which he entered as a Humanoid and graduated as a Weasel. When not doing comedy, Alex enjoys discussing unreal expectations for the Sacramento Kings over a delicious local craft beer.

ALLIE BERTA
Allison (better known as Allie because her childhood friend followed her to Sacramento and railroaded all the groundwork she had laid in trying to establish herself by her adult name) made her acting debut when she played the lead role (as a charismatic fish) in her second grade class performance. Her dreams were dashed when she forgot a line and avoided the stage until said childhood friend above encouraged her to give improv a try in the summer of 2016. She was delighted to discover that lines needn’t be memorized and has been enjoying being a part of the Comedy Spot family ever since!

AMY ALLEN
A pet owner of 7, Amy has almost learned to whistle. Being a fan of laughter as well as the pretend and the awkward, she has been a part of the Comedy Spot community since 2012. Her favorite past times include listening to ghost stories, being amazed by the human condition, and trying to not burn bacon. Come say hi; she’ll tell you a story about Red, her favorite chicken.

CHRIS LOCK
Chris was born to two wise old Redwood Trees in the Northern California Wilderness. He spent his early youth standing tall and taking long naps in the rays of the sun and the shade of his parents. However, at a young age, Chris woke from a nap to find his parents had disappeared. Separated from his grove, Chris’ life and sense of self had been uprooted. Luckily, while wandering, he came across a pack of humans who took him in and raised him as their own. Adapting to life as a Redwood Tree among humans was not easy for Chris. He had to hide his roots in his shoes and hope everyone would assume he had big feet, and he wasn’t very good at hide and go seek. It wasn’t all bad, though. Chris’ height allowed him to play basketball where competitors generously told him he was “all bark and no bite” which Chris assumed was due to his tree-like stature and kind, warm personality off the court. Chris became interested in comedy after having dinner with his close friend and improviser, Ian Besser, who told Chris he would be a perfect fit for long-form improv and that he should audition. Chris enjoys several other hobbies of both human and Redwood origin including tinkering with computers, tabletop games, math, and throwing shade at whoever needs it.

GABY GILMORE
Gaby comes from the bustling metropolis of Modesto, CA. She left her gang affiliation and family behind to pursue her dream of becoming an auditor in Sacramento. When she’s not staring at a spreadsheet, she enjoys indie movies, Dippin’ Dots, and reporting crimes in progress from her apartment window. She’s not being sarcastic (for once) when she says she’s super excited to be a part of the Sacramento Comedy Spot community.

JACK BROWN
Jackson “Jack” Brown is not the American musician and songwriter who has sold over 18 million albums in the United States. He has sold considerably fewer albums, and the songs he penned for The Eagles were so bad that they led to his prosecution under the Alien and Sedition Acts. Jackson and Jack both have the similar names and questionable hair styles, but that is where the similarities end. Jack is very grateful to be able to perform at the Sacramento Comedy Spot, as they have provided him with a platform to espouse his vehement belief that Dinger is better than Slamson. Please bend his ear after a show if you have any wardrobe advice for him.

At Sonoma State University, she joined and lived with the Improvaholics, a long form team. Presently, she works in conjuncture with the Globe Education Academy (UC Davis) and teaches game based learning to secondary teachers. She is thrilled to be a part of the Sacramento Comedy Spot family, and the Harold, Your Honor, and FTR Teams. Outside of improv, she is a high school English teacher, Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) club advisor, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support site coach, and avid fan of the oxford comma. When she isn’t nerding out about color symbolism, chiasmus, or the hero’s journey, she is with four legged roommates – Little Pete and Kuzco. Remember to tip your bartender!

KEVIN COOLEY
Asked what he does on a typical Saturday night, Kevin said with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, he pulls the spitting high tension wires down. Helpless people on a subway train scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them. He picks up a bus and he throws it back down as he wades through the buildings toward the center of town. But since becoming involved with the Comedy Spot, he’s put the kibosh on most of that.

Ask her to join you on a walk instead, or if she has any good book recommendations because she does! She also loves to film videos and edit them in the comfort of her own bedroom (not like that) (but maybe like that too) it’s a career move. She’s a vulgar Little brown sweet heart. Passionate about making people smile. La Neta.

MATTHEW WALKER
As far back as he remembers, the pop-culture loving film/television geek, M@, has always been into comedy. It comes sandwiched tightly between imaginationing* and writing on his list of things he’s passionate about (read: “very good at”). Whether it was making family members laugh at gatherings, listening to comedy albums, watching HBO standup specials, or simply discovering Comedy Central before it was called Comedy Central he has constantly immersed himself in all things humor throughout his life.

“I remember it vividly. I was standing on the edge of my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A picture in my head!  This is what makes laughter possible: humor!” he recalls.

*he likes to make up his own wørds.

MELONY FORD
Melony (she/they) has been doing improv since the spring of 2017. Before finding the Comedy Spot, Melony’s achievements included: watching 1,000 hours of YouTube; having the second best red bellied toads of the Rancho Cordova 4H Club in 2003; engaging with Sacramento LGBTQ activism; performing slam poetry nationally for sometimes enthusiastic audiences; attending a women’s college, ultimately earning a Bachelor’s in women’s studies; and making their own doctor’s appointments. Now, when she’s not at the Comedy Spot, Melony might be drinking overpriced coffee, watching Dr. Phil reruns, or trying to craft the next queer classic. Most likely though, Melony is somewhere right now, asleep.

NATHAN LITTLE
Nathan Little’s improv affliction began in 2006 with an unprotected encounter with a virulent strain of short form (Staphylococcus ComedySportz) in a high school club. To great familial dismay, the condition proved chronic. Over the years Nathan sought treatment with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York and Los Angeles, Wing-It Productions in Seattle, and less structured, naturopathic care provided by the Ubiquitous They comedy troupe at the University of Puget Sound. He is survived by his student debt. In lieu of flowers, Nathan requested donations be made to your bartender and waitstaff.

NICK MAGAVERN
WARNING: If you don’t want to have your gut busted up from laughing so dang hard while, simultaneously, your whole freakin’ mind is being blown to pieces, then you should probably turn back now. Nick Magavern holds a mirror up to society, only that mirror is a funhouse mirror, and the society in question is a society of circus clowns.

Magavern has spent many years as an active political dissident, subverting the status quo by downloading music illegally and refusing to floss. His main comedic influences are Monty Python, Lenny Bruce, and the Joker. So get on down to the Comedy Spot and check him out before he gets locked up for being too real.

So far, he has learned the importance of the 3 B’s: bacon, beer, and burgers. Also, he has learned that solving any issue ASAP at work involves setting up a meeting, opening up a can of worms, giving 2 cents, going back to square one, and hitting the nail on the head (not necessarily in that order). Next time you meet him at the Comedy Spot, do ask him how he feels about Wayne Rooney’s move away from Manchester United or how his name is pronounced. In case you were wondering, his name is pronounced “Can I buy you a beer?”
